Safety Tips for Towing a Trailer

Safety Tips for Towing a Trailer

Towing accidents are common even in major cities. Oftentimes, accidents usually happen when the trailer disconnects from the tow vehicle, and suddenly hits another car. We have seen how accidents like this eventually lead to traffic jams and unfortunate loss of lives. Clearly, we don’t want that. So to avoid mishaps, here are some safety tips for towing a trailer that you can follow.

Know your weight limits

Make sure your trailer is commensurate with the capacity of your vehicle. Check your truck manual to see the trailer limits that your vehicle is allowed to tow. You haul whatever you can that is below the maximum weight limitation of your vehicle but never above it. Most importantly, use the right trailer hitch and make sure your trailer is hitched properly.

Distribute the weight evenly

If your trailer is heavier than your truck, you might bump behind you when you brake. It can also cause your driving to wobble, which is why it is important to see how the weight is distributed on the trailer. Also, make sure you don’t load more stuff at the end as it might pull backwards when the road is uphill. Do not put too much item either on the left or right side as your trailer might tip over.

Inflate your tires properly

Check your tires and make sure you have enough air to sustain your journey. You don’t want any tire blowout in the middle of your driving. Make sure that your wheel bearings are working properly too. An overheated bearing can sideline your trailer as fast as a tire blowout.

Ensure the trailer lights are working

The lights on your trailer should have the same function as your tow truck. The vehicles behind you will normally depend on the lights they see. If your trailer doesn’t have lights, they can bump into it and make you liable. So make sure you connect the brake and signal lights to your trailer. It should also have a signal for right and left turn. Check if the hazard and stop signals also work as they are very important.

Finally, make sure you double check everything. Fasten the chain. Secure the hitch. Check your mirror and make sure everything looks good behind. Hit the gas pedal and observe your driving for a couple of minutes. If you notice something is wrong, you need to find it and remedy the problem. Otherwise, you should be safe to go.

Common Types of Brake Repairs

Common Types of Brake Repairs

Owning a car requires you to know a lot of things related to cars. When you have the common knowledge, it is easier to identify issues whenever something goes wrong with your car. One of the essential parts of cars is the brake. In case you happen to have some troubles with your brakes, you need to know the most common types of brake repairs.

Shoe replacement

This is one of the most common types of brake repairs. Normally, you have to replace the pad everytime to hit 20,000 miles to stay on the safe side. Some pads can live up to 50, 000 but there are some pads that are only good up to 10, 000. It is essential that you also check with your manufacturer the type of pads. In any case, you need to observe whether your brakes are already squealing or sticking. This is a sign that you need to drop by your local repair shop.

Line replacement

Brake lines carry the fluid from the car’s master cylinder throughout the brake system. This is why it has to be clean at all times. You need to check for tiny holes that cause leakage leading to more serious problems in the future.  For most care repairs, line replacement is sort of an emergency situation. Sometimes, it is hard to notice it when you are a first-time driver. For safety purposes, you need to bring your car to the maintenance site on schedule to check if there are any problems.

Master Cylinder

The master cylinder is comprised of several pistons and valves. It serves as a reservoir for fluid and is responsible for regulating the brake pressure. This type of brake repair is rarely done but when your master cylinder is damaged, it will cause serious problems with your brake. So it is best to keep  your brakes in check with your manufacturer or local repair shop.

Random parts replacement

Just as the name says, this is one of the common types of brake repairs which involve replacing some parts of your brakes with new ones. As mentioned earlier, your brake is composed of small to large pieces which can be worn out over time.  For example, calipers are a common issue in most repair shops. The calipers hold the brake pad and keep them in position. Apparently, they can get old due to wear and tear. Hence, you need to replace them to keep your brakes functioning well.

Things to Consider When Picking an Auto Repair Shop

Things to Consider When Picking an Auto Repair Shop

Taking your vehicle to a local repair shop involves taking a great leap of faith. Due to the fact that there are various car repair shops out there that offer sub-par services; one has to be very careful before taking your car to one. So, you need to take your time to do a little research of your own before settling for a service that may disappoint you.

So, you need a guide on factors to consider before making such selection and to make the task an easy job for you:

Good recommendations

You should never underestimate the importance of getting recommendations as it may save you a lot of trouble during the selection process. Make inquiries from your friends, family, and neighbors about the different auto repair shops in your locality and the one with the best work and customer service.

Looking for an experienced car service shop should be a major thing to consider when making a choice. Although, the years of experience a business has existed doesn’t really mean it’s a reliable business, as it’s possible for them to have had various mechanics in that period of time. So, it’s preferable to go with a mechanic with 20 years of experience than a service shop that has been in existence for 20 years because you are sure the mechanic knows what he’s doing.

Good online reviews

If you feel the referrals you got from your friends and family are not enough, what you should go online and then look for the best car service shops in your vicinity.  You should pay enough attention to the positive and negative reviews of every customer.

Clean and well-organized

It’s almost impossible to find a clean car repair shop. However, it is important for these shops to maintain a good level of cleanliness and organization, rather than leaving it in messy and filthy. An organized car repair shop will most likely not lose any parts or make use of wrong parts.

Different Types of Tow Truck Services

Different Types of Tow Truck Services

There are different kinds of towing services offered by towing companies. Each type of service has its own pros and cons, and in most cases, you are in the best position to decide the service that will better match your requirements. Nevertheless, this article will give you some insights, assistance, and guidance that you’ll find helpful when you need to hire a towing company for the service you require.

Basically, the major factor that is to be given the optimum importance is the safety of your vehicle. You should never compromise a quality towing service for a cheap fee, and you should always choose a company based on the safety of your car and yourself.

Here is an insight on some of the major types of towing services provided by virtually all towing companies:

  • Flatbed Towing:

This type of towing service provides a safe and dependable option when it comes to towing your vehicle. Professional towing companies are usually well equipped with the tools required to safely lift your vehicle, strap it properly and take it to your required destination. Also, most of these companies offer both short and long distance flatbed towing services for any kind of vehicle, be it a sports car, antique collection, SUV, utility truck, mini truck and so on. These towing vehicles usually come with a 4 wheel tie-down system, and as per various research; it has proven to be one of the safest and most recommended ways to safely transport your vehicle.

  • Wheel Lift Towing:

This method is more efficient and cheaper for a vehicle that weighs lesser than 10,000 lbs. It allows you to save more money if you are on a budget.

  • Medium Duty Towing:

It is also a reliable option for towing vehicles that weigh above 10,000 lbs.

  • Heavy Duty Towing:

This provides a more comprehensive solution to towing large vehicles such as tankers, Lorries, etc. The entire vehicle is lifted off the ground and hung in the air.

There are some companies that also provide towing services for motorcycles and RVs in case they develop a fault on the road.

Changing the Exhaust on Your Car or Truck (DIY)

Changing the Exhaust on Your Car or Truck (DIY)

A damaged exhaust system lets waste gases from the car engine escape before the gases reach the rear of the car. The leaked gas makes a noise that gradually gets louder as the cracks or holes on the exhaust get bigger.

Tools you might need during the procedure:

  • Large screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Spanners
  • Sockets
  • Wire brush
  • Jack
  • Emery cloth
  • Cold chisel
  • Engine oil
  • Torch
  • Goggles
  • Gaskets
  • Ramps

Before removing the old exhaust, try to sketch the layout properly noting where it is fixed in relation to the suspension and handbrake linkage. You should also note how rubber hangers are fitted because if you assemble incorrectly, excessive movements in the system will occur which can shorten its lifespan.

To undo the manifold joint, try to raise the car on axle stands or ramps securely. In most cases, the nuts are badly corroded making it difficult to undo. So, you should clean the visible threads with a wire brush and lubricate with penetrating oil. Use a ring spanner or sockets to undo the joints. After removing the joint, remove the old exhaust pipe and use a scraper to clean the traces of gasket on the manifold.

To reconnect the manifold clamp and flange joint, firstly clean the clamp of the fire-resistant compounds using a wire brush and then lubricate the bolts until you can tighten the bolts with your hand. Coat the metal-to-metal joints with a fire-resistant compound. Ask someone else to jack the pipe into position for you as you arrange the clamps around it.

Add the washers and other fittings; screw the nuts with your hand and tighten (lightly) with a spanner. Do not tighten fully until the system has been completely fitted.

Clean the threads on the studs of the flange joint with a wire brush and confirm that the nuts can be screwed easily using a hand. To make the nuts screw easily, the threads should be cleaned and lubricated.

Ensure that the surfaces the gasket will be placed on are clean, and fix the new gasket. Tighten the nuts properly until the flanges are in contact with the gasket (do not compress).

Replace rusted or chafed exhaust mountings. If you are fitting new mountings, cut through the former mounting with a mini hacksaw and ensure you wear goggles.

How to Safely Tow an RV

How to Safely Tow an RV

RVs are arguably one of the biggest vehicles on the roads; however, they are also susceptible to breakdowns. Given that they are used for long-distance journeys, when they breakdown, the driver/owner always get stuck in a difficult position with just a few options.

  • A tow bar
  • A skilled driver
  • A truck with a hitch that can tow a three-quarter ton load or even higher

STEP 1: Attach the tow bar to the truck’s hitch and slowly back up the track to the front of the RV until the tow bar hooks the frame of the broken RV. A lot of towbars always have a base plate that can be attached to the RV’s frame making use of the bolts that came with the tow bar. These bolts will go through the pre-drilled holes on the RV frame. You can tell someone to watch to make sure it’s attached properly while you put the towing truck into drive and move forward slowly.

STEP 2: Fix chains or safety cables on either side of the hitch then hook them to the RV frame. The cables are specifically made for towing, and they come with the tow bar. Their purpose is to hold the RV should the tow bar break.

STEP 3: Hook the electrical cables up so that the turn and brake lights of the truck can register on the rear of the RV. All RV must have an attachment head for these cables that are fixed underneath its body. After connecting these cables to the head, ensure the lights work properly.

STEP 4: Begin to accelerate carefully, try to stay on the side road instead of the main road and tow to the closest repair workshop or parking spot.

STEP 5: With the RV hooked to the truck, the truck should be driven like it is 100ft longer than it is normally when it isn’t towing anything. When towing, take wide left and right turns and try to avoid right turns generally if they are extremely tight.

  • Don’t tow an RV up or down a steep
  • Don’t tow an RV on your own
  • Someone should be sitting in the driver’s seat of the RV hitting the brake simultaneously with the truck to reduce the strain on the towing vehicle.

Installing a Lift Kit

Installing a Lift Kit

Installing a lift kit in your driveway means you will need at the very least a floor jack and four jack stands. Better to use a 6-ton jack stand just to be safe since we’ll be crawling around under the vehicle. As for floor jacks, get the best one you can afford. As much as we like the idea of aluminum floor jacks, we’ve had better luck with a big heavy 3 1⁄2-ton steel floor jack.

  1. Replace all the factory shocks and coils, so those items were removed first.

2. Use a die grinder with a carbide tip to open up the lower link mount hole into a slot. This is the only step requiring a specialty tool, a die grinder. You could do this with a file, but it would take a long time.

3. Drill out the factory axle bumps’ stop pad for the taller OME bumpstops. Using a step bit for this job helps keep the drill and bit package shorter and fits between the frame and axle easier. The instructions call for installing the front spacers before the coil springs, but we found it easier to put the spacers in the coils, then install the coils first, and afterwards add the bolts to the spacer.

4. Use a ratchet strap to pull the frame centered over the axle makes installing the track bar much easier.

5. The rear axle also needs the link mount holes elongated and the new tabs installed. This step is irritating unless you have a long shank bit in your die grinder since the outer part of the bracket is up against near the brake backing plate. The instructions do not call for any welding, but we feel that tack-welding these tabs to the axle brackets would add strength and reliability.

6. The front and rear suspensions also get longer sway-bar links. If you do not have a Rubicon (with the factory disconnecting sway bar) you can install the included sway-bar disconnect kit. There are also extension brackets for the brake lines, parking brake cables, and longer Nitrocharger shocks.

7. The kit is a 4-inch lift, but we added the included heavy load spacers for an additional 1⁄2 inch since this Wrangler has a hard top, rock sliders, and a winch bumper and is often used for camping where additional people and gear are hauled around. The suspension easily cleared the 35×12.50R17 Pit Bull Rockers on American Expedition Vehicles 17-inch Pintler wheels and could clear 37s with aftermarket high-clearance fenders. These tires are much more aggressive than the factory rubber, and the wheels have an inch less backspacing than stock to help clear all the suspension arms when turning.
